A friend who plays golf suggested lunch after a round at Punta Espada, and because I am a person who has opinions about not wasting a day on something I don't do well, I said yes to lunch and no to eighteen holes. What I didn't fully appreciate was that the drive from the 18th green into the Hoyo 19 clubhouse involves a terrace view of the Caribbean that recalibrates your understanding of what a 'nice lunch spot' can mean.

Hoyo 19 is the restaurant at Punta Espada Golf Course, named as golf restaurants always are after the imaginary post-game hole where everyone eventually ends up anyway. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It does not require you to be a golfer. It does not even particularly ask about it. You walk in, you sit on the terrace if there's space, and then the view does something to you that no interior decorator has ever been able to replicate with wallpaper and ambient lighting.

The View Is Doing a Lot of the Work (and the Food Doesn't Have to Compensate)

Punta Espada's terrace looks out over the 18th hole with the Caribbean Sea beyond it. Eight of the course's holes run directly along the clifftop above the ocean, and from the right seat at Hoyo 19 you can see several of them framed against that water. On a clear day and most days here are clear days the color out there is something you want to take a photograph of while knowing the photograph won't do it justice. It never does.

The food is better than it needs to be, which I mean as a genuine compliment. A golf course restaurant could coast entirely on its setting and get away with it. Hoyo 19 doesn't do that. The kitchen takes lunch seriously solid menu, well-prepared, the kind of food that makes you feel looked after without anyone making a production of the service. Breakfast is equally good and even better for the setting, when the morning light hits the fairways in a way that makes the whole scene look slightly unreal.

The Part Where I Tell You You Don't Need to Golf

I will say this clearly because it seems to confuse people: you do not need to be a Punta Espada golfer, a hotel guest, or a person who owns shoes with spikes to eat at Hoyo 19. You just need to want lunch in one of the most beautiful settings in Cap Cana. Call ahead or walk in, sit on the terrace, and let the food and the view sort out the rest. The golfers coming off the 18th hole won't mind sharing the space. They're in a good mood by then regardless of how the round went.

I came for lunch and stayed until the light changed. Hoyo 19 does that to you if you let it.
